A living museum, between exhibition and production

Ideally located in the historic center of Paris, the Hôtel de la Monnaie, which faces theÎle de la Cité is located between Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarteron the left bank of the seine.

Dedicated to the arts of metal, La Monnaie de Paris is a museum with over 200,000 items in addition to the temporary exhibitions on display. It's also a temple to coinage that's still in operation.

  • For ages 5-8 - 3pm to 5pm (check slots on the site), with an adult - Shape your bestiary - Search for real or legendary animals hidden in the collections
  • Starting from 7 years old - Wednesdays and Saturdays from 3pm to 5pm (with an adult) - "Chocolate melts - to make sparkling chocolate medals like a craftsman
  • Ages 7 and up - Wednesdays and Saturdays from 3pm to 5pm (with an adult). "Make your own medal - in the shoes of a Monnaie de Paris engraver and create a medal
  • Ages 10 and up - Wednesdays and Saturdays from 3 to 5 p.m. (with an adult)- "from metal to jewelry lhe magic of craftsmanship: polishing, enameling and jewelry-making, to give life to a unique jewel.
  • Ages 12 and up - Wednesdays from 3pm to 5pm (with an adult) "Make your own decoration!" - discover how the great official decorations such as the Légion d'Honneur and the Ordre du Mérite are made...

La Monnaie de Paris: a minute's history

  • The museum is attached to the institution that produces coinage in France, the Monnaie de Paris. It is located in the Hôtel de la Monnaie, 11 quai de Conti, Paris.
  • Magnificent 18th-century building built by architect Denis Antoine, it replaced the old mint workshops established since the 14th century.
  • The first museum was built in 1833, and modernized in 1991 and 2017 to present the ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary collections on u1200m of restored space2
  • On display are masterpieces such as Capetian coins, gold louis and paper money, as well as tools, objets d'art and scientific objects.
  • The pedagogical point of view traces the entire chain from mineral extraction to the minting of coins and medals. Platinum, gold, silver, zinc, iron and nickel ... they all have their own use, their own function, whether symbolic or technical.
  • An entire room is devoted to numismatics and counterfeit coins, while another showcases treasures !
  • Monnaie de Paris is more than a museum, it's also a factoryA lively place of money-making that has endured for several centuries.
  • The tour route is laid out so that visitors can see the arts and crafts workshops.
  • Through a window, nothing escapes our attention: the craftsmen are dressed in silver overalls and fireproof masks. The handling of molds, tongs and tools and... the highlight of the show: the fascinating molten metal pours!
  • This is the most surprising part of the visit and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the children!
