exhibition prehistory a modern enigma at Beaubourg

A museum of modern and contemporary art presents an exhibition entitled "Prehistory, a modern enigma"!

  • The Centre Pompidou makes prehistory modern. He takes the side of bringing together the artists of prehistory with those called modern or contemporary like Cézanne, Klein, Picasso or Louise Bourgeois.
  • The purpose of this exhibition is to to question the fascination that the prehistoric period exerts on modern and contemporary art.
  • This subject has remained relatively untouched until now. There was an exhibition at MoMA in New York in 1937, and then at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1948.
  • The itinerary is chronological and the exhibition gathers more than 300 works,. It begins with prehistoric works such as the Mammoth of the Madeleine and presents modern and contemporary works specially created for the occasion.
  • One enters the exhibition as in a cave, by penetrating in the dark. At the beginning, we cross the skull of a Cro-Magnon man then we admire the famous Venus of Lespugue. It is about a 25 000 years old Venus, small statuette of less than 15 centimeters, carved in the ivory of a mammoth?s tusk. It has a tiny head without face and disproportionate forms. This Venus has fascinated the greatest artists, including Picasso who had a replica molded in his studio. He was clearly inspired by it for his 1936 painting "Reclining Nude Woman".
  • The exhibition shows how modern artists such as Fontana, Dubuffet, Picasso, Yves Klein and many others are interested in the codes of the Palaeolithic, in the parietal traces.
  • Finally, the exhibition recalls the role of films in the popular diffusion of prehistory with "The War of Fire", "The Lost World", "King Kong", "Space Odyssey", "Jurassic Park".
  • "Prehistory, a modern enigma" is a very beautiful exhibition which succeeds in bringing together astonishing and original works. It leads us to look at the greatest masterpieces of modern and contemporary art from a resolutely new angle.
  • The exhibition was realized in partnership with the Muséum national d?Histoire naturelle ? Museum of Man, the Museum of National Archaeology ? Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the National Museum of Prehistory.
