• The story is set in the 1950s, when thehe youth of America is divided into clans who seek to reign over a city territory.
• There is the Jetsled by Riff. They are white, working class, born in America but of European descent through their immigrant parents ...
• and there are the Sharkswhose leader is Bernardo. This is the clan of young people from Puerto Rico, also born on American soil and likewise descended from immigrant parents.
• But things get complicated... when Bernardo's sister Maria meets and falls in love with Tonya former head of the Jets ...
