Nicolas de Staël, a new look

  • It's another beautiful exhibition by Museum of Modern Art of Paris 200 works of art, and in chronological order the evolution of Nicolas de Staël's painting between 1940 and 1955
  • We discover art accessible to all reading levels. Between abstraction and figuration, the children of 3 to 6 years old as much as teens will find meaning in the paintings of this artist who never stuck to the debates on representation of his time.
  • Paintings, drawings, prints and notebooks from public and private collectionsin Europe and the United States. Nicolas de Staël's production lasted only 12 years.
  • It reveals the richness and diversity of a man's perceptions. hungry for plastic discoveries and who, through the travels that inspired him, was always in pursuit of new worlds.
  • Normandy, Provence and Sicily gave him the opportunity toa new light every time different.
  • His use of color, with its shades of grey, violet skies, red seas and strong impasto, testifies to the experimental nature of his work.

  • Baby visit (0-8 months) :
    • Wednesday, September 20, 2023 to Wednesday, January 10, 2024 - 3 to 6 p.m.
    • A gentle visit for pre-walking babies and their parents to encounter the works of Nicolas de Staël. As you move through the exhibition, yoga and Wutao exercises invite you to relax and unwind. At the end of the visit, seated on mats, parents take part in the creation of a souvenir object to take home. Note: baby carrier mandatory
  • Bout à Bout (1 to 3 years) :
    • Wednesday, September 20, 2023 to Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
    • Some of Nicolas de Staël's works evoke the mosaic effect of colored fragments. This new vocabulary gives the artist great freedom. Children grab hold of colored, torn paper, which may become an apple or a bouquet of flowers.
  • Build-unbuild (ages 1-3) :
    • Wednesday, October 4, 2023 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
    • Nicolas de Staël's creative process involved first constructing, then undoing. This process is just as logical in the creative apprenticeship of the very young, who can constantly compose and decompose with parts and a magnetic holder.

    • Nicolas de Staël used to cut out small cardboard sketches for paintings to be "made later". Children and parents are invited to createin the studio, motifs they'll keep to paint "later".

    • Wednesday, September 20, 2023 to Saturday, January 13, 2024 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    • The exhibition evokes the physical aspect of the painter's practice and his sensitivity to the world: trees, leaves, colors. In workshops, children will use their language to paint a landscape.
  • Créations nomades (4-6 years)
    • Wednesday, September 27 to Saturday, January 20, 2:30 to 4 p.m.
    • Travel was central to Nicolas de Staël's work. Participants in this workshop will find inspiration in the artist's works for create a landscape in the manner of the artist
  • Œuvre sensible (ages 7-10)
    • Wednesday, September 27 to Saturday, January 20, 2 to 4 p.m.
    • Children will experience the artist's sensitive world in his studio. A veritable laboratory, like de Staël on his small formats, they will work on speed to enable them to work on the "sensitive".
  • Fragmented journeys - Au Fil des voyages (ages 7-10)
    • Saturday, September 30, 2023 to Saturday, January 20, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
    • The exhibition highlights the travel theme and light in the artist's work. From Normandy to Sicily, via Provence, landscapes have influenced his work. Children will draw inspiration from these landscape fragments to recreate a work of art.

Activities for teens

  • Photography and sound (ages 11 to 14)
    • From Tuesday, October 24 to Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
    • It's a workshop where young people take photos without a camera ! In the digital age, they'll go into the photo lab to try out photogram and cyanotype techniques. It's a real challenge to create your own universe, a bit like de Staël, who defied the quarrels between figuration and abstraction in which he took no part.
