"Mexica. Gifts and gods at the Templo Mayor".

Beneath the cobblestones of Mexico City lie the remains of Tenochtitlan, the heart of a rich and powerful empire: Mexica ...

  • Arriving at this new musée du quai Branly, we're off to meet an entire empire from pre-Columbian times
  • Thanks to the most recent archaeological discoveries, witnesses of the ancient capital Tenochtitlan and its main temple are on display for the first time in Europe.
  • Previously called Aztec, it refers to the Mexica empire (1325-1521) established in what is now the Mexico City basin.
  • The Musée du quai Branly exhibits 204 items and sculptures that the Mexican people placed in homage to their deities or in exchange for favors requested from the gods.
  • We find: quetzalcoalt, the feathered serpent which links heaven and earth; Tatloc, the god of rain, the eagle or the hummingbird, the birds representing the sky; but also the god of the sun and of war.
  • And of course thehe god of death with its pierced head and locks of hair
  • The frog with the human face is one of the images we'll remember from this fascinating encounter with the Mexica people.
