rules for the use of electric scooters in Paris

WHAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION'S LEGISLATION PROVIDES

A law should normally come into force in September 2019 to regulate the use of electric scooters in Paris. The growing number of users of electric scooters and other EDPM (motorized personal transport devices), the increasing number of accidents and the permanent incivilities oblige the government to take measures. Here's what this legislation might provide:

THE RULES OF THE ROAD FOR ELECTRIC SCOOTERS

  • Respect fires and stop
  • The maximum speed limit is 25km/h
  • You will need to equip your electric scooter with a horn
  • You will have to wear a nice vest retroreflective at night or if visibility is poor
  • Forbidden to park them on sidewalks

SIDEWALKS ARE FOR PEDESTRIANS ONLY

  • Sidewalks are prohibited to electric scooters since January 2019
  • Obligation touse bike paths
  • If there are no bike paths, you must use the roads with a 50 km/h speed limit
  • If you use the sidewalks, it's engine off and scooter in hand

CHILDREN AND ELECTRIC SCOOTERS

  • Age requirement to drive an electric scooter is 8 years
  • Children are not allowed on an adult's scooter
  • Helmets are mandatory for children under 12 years old (as for the bicycle)

IF YOU DO NOT RESPECT THE LAW

  • A fine of 135? if you drive on the sidewalks
  • A fine of 35? for non-compliance with the law
  • A fine of 1500? if the speed exceeds 25km/h
