- Born in 1938 near Dresden, teenager in the GDR, expelled from the Fine Arts for works inspired by Picasso, he moved to the West at the beginning of the 60s
- Baselitz's entire oeuvre is marked by his experience of Nazi and Soviet totalitarianism
- Essentially figurative, his painting is angry and fights against the established order, against the ethic diktats
- The reversal of the head-down motif that he achieved in 1969 is considered to be Baselitz' trademark
