Magellan, a journey that changed the world

The immersive story of the first round the world race, the greatest maritime feat of all time

  • This time, it is with Magellan that the Musée de la Marine invites us to discover the world thanks to an immersive scenography combining nearly 30 monumental projections, graphic animations, excerpts from documentaries and interviews with historians
  • Guided by travel columnist Antonio Pigafetta and illustrations by Ugo Bienvenu from the series Magellan’s Incredible Journey, we relive the incredible crossing undertaken 500 years ago by the captain and his crews

The exhibition invites young and old alike to reflect as a family on the legacy of Magellan, who is still alive five centuries later.

⚓️ The Magellan ⚓️ Expedition

  • On September 20, 1519 … 5 sailboats leave the port of Seville with the aim of finding a passage through America to reach the Pacific and reach the Indies…
  • On the other side of the world, in Indonesia, the Moluccas Islands, nicknamed the Spice Islands, aroused the envy of the rival kingdoms of Spain and Portugal
  • Three years later, in 1522, only one ship managed to return, with eighteen weakened surviving sailors on board. Magellan, for his part, would never see Europe again.
  • At the heart of this epic, the route gives way to emotion in front of the harshness of the sea, the economic and territorial stakes of the sixteenth century, the battles but also to the wonder of discoveries and the meeting of peoples

The sailors, often forgotten, have completed the first circumnavigation of the world. They paved the way for new explorations and forever changed our view of the globe!
