The Paris Sewer Museum: an unusual visit
Want to visit Paris in a different way? The Sewer Museum invites you to explore what goes on behind the scenes. A unique, educational and slightly humid underground experience… It is a visit that is both fun and educational, which makes you think about our consumption and waste treatment. The message is clear: sewers are not garbage cans!
Beneath the streets of Paris lies a little-known world: a network of underground galleries that transport the capital’s wastewater. The museum offers you a 500-metre dive into a technical and fascinating labyrinth.
The first part of the visit is in a dry gallery. It traces the history of the sewers of Paris, from their creation to the present day. You will learn how water is collected and treated, what are the jobs related to sanitation, what are the current ecological issues and why it is essential not to throw anything into the pipes
Then comes the wet gallery. You walk in real and working sewers. Get ready to smell some smells and feel a little coolness: the average temperature is 13°C.
