BAAM! SPINACH ART — FOR EVERYONE FROM 9 YEARS OLD

“Baam! art in spinach”, we love not only the title, but also everything in this program offered by France TV. Playful and very intelligent, Baam! presents in 5 minutes a major painting of the history of art. He links it to its historical context and to an artistic movement. It’s very lively and very documented. We advise adults to watch too, just to shine at your next dinners (post-confinement!)
The topics covered are very varied:

  • Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper
  • Manet and his painting “The Balcony”
  • the Sistine Madonna by Rafaello Sanzio

We like the initiative of the Orchestre de Paris which, in these times of confinement, continues to make the discovery of classical music accessible to as many people as possible, large or small.

  • Monsieur Onde : to discover the greatest works of the classical repertoire. Monsieur Onde offers a disco for young audiences, musical puzzles and cartoons…:
  • Note figures: to discover the instruments of the orchestra, It’s very well done. You will discover all the instruments of the orchestra, from percussion to strings and woodwinds. Their sound, their place in the orchestra, all accompanied by a game to test your ear.

ANTI-FOOD WASTE: what about expiry dates?

In this period of confinement and sometimes food restriction with stores not always very well stocked, this article from the website La Nutrition, summarizes the foods we can eat after the expiration date. Useful when we have to restrict outings to go grocery shopping.

A FASTOCHE, QUICK AND ECONOMICAL CHILDHOOD DESSERT: EGGS WITH MILK

  • Serves 6 to 8
  • 1/2 l milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 75 g sugar
  • Flavor (1 teaspoon liquid vanilla or 1 sachet vanilla sugar)
  • Cooking for about 25 minutes in a bain-marie
  • Preheat the oven (th. 6 or 180°). Boil the milk with the sugar. In a bowl, beat the whole eggs. Gradually pour in the boiling milk, stirring well. Add the fragrance. Pour into a porcelain dish or ramekins and put the dish (or ramekins) in a hot water bath. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes (as soon as the top starts to take color). Between 6 and 8 individual ramekins per 1/2l of milk.

Loose little ideas for getting organized at home

  • Early childhood specialists advise us to structure the children’s day with a timetable – to be respected as much as possible – (a more complicated one to set up with toddlers)
  • We are living in an exceptional and unprecedented situation: offer your children and teenagers to keep a small logbook or a personal diary. This will be a great writing exercise and an opportunity for them to express how they feel about this confinement at home
  • Make a chart with activities and tasks to be divided between parents and children. With a bit of luck (let’s remain optimistic), it will continue after…
  • Let’s support independent booksellers (who have been hurt by this Coronavirus crisis) by ordering our books on sites like lalibrairie.com

A great podcast for children “Les Odyssées” (from 7 to 12 years old)

It was conceived and produced by Laure Grandbesançon (radio columnist and producer). Each Podcast lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the theme. Some are related to the school curriculum. A fun way to make them revise their classics.

Some themes among the 25 Podcasts offered to children:

  • The discovery of the Lascaux Cave
  • the life of Socrates
  • Merlin and the creation of the round table
  • Investigation of the Man in the Iron Mask
  • Loch Ness Monster Investigation
The Odysseys, the Podcast for children

A nice series to watch with pre-teens

  • “Anne with an E” : an adaptation of the story of a little orphan girl on Prince Edwards Island. It is the story of a young orphan, fiery and full of confidence, who comes to live with an old maid and her brother. Inspired by the novel “Anne… The House of Green Gables”
  • From 12/13 years old
  • 30 episodes / 3 seasons on Netflix

An idea for a movie to watch with teenagers

  • Imitation Game (on Prime Video): a very beautiful film about war, tolerance and the creation of Artificial Intelligence and the computer. A film that will allow you to discuss important subjects with your children

At snack time: the recipe for French toast

  • Brioche or bread from the day before yesterday
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 glasses of milk
  • 2 tbsp caster sugar
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar
  • The recipe : mix all the ingredients. We soak the bread or the brioche. In a pan with a little butter, brown the slice of bread (or brioche) and sprinkle with sugar (so that it caramelizes a little) before turning it over.

Cooking with the family: the simple recipe for pizza dough

  • 300 gr of T45 or double 0 flour
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 packet of baker’s yeast
  • 15cl lukewarm water
  • 1 small tablespoon of sugar and a little salt
  • The recipe : Mix the warm water and the baker’s yeast. Then we mix all the ingredients together. Form a ball and let it rest for 10 minutes in the refrigerator. Roll out the ball of dough into the shape of your choice. Cover with tomato sauce and then ingredients of your choice. And put it in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes max. at 220° (preferably convection heat)

Family cooking (continued): how about making fresh homemade pasta

  • Proportion: 100gr of flour for 1 egg (to be multiplied according to the number of people)
  • The recipe : Mix the flour and the egg. Form a ball and let it rest for 10 minutes in the refrigerator. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin or with a floured glass bottle to about 1cm thick. We roll and cut (to obtain tagliatelle). We give the shape of our choice.
